CM unveils education, uplift initiatives in South Punjab

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif unveiled a series of significant development and education initiatives during a ceremony in Layyah on Thursday, where she distributed laptops and Honhar scholarship cheques. In her address, the CM announced the establishment of a medical college in Layyah and allocated Rs3 billion for the development of universities in Dera Ghazi Khan and Layyah. She also declared the creation of the Nawaz Sharif Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood Education in both cities. Highlighting her commitment to educational reform, the CM announced a massive Rs110 billion plan to provide basic facilities—classrooms, toilets, and clean water—to all schools in Punjab within a year. "No school in Punjab will be deprived of essential facilities," she said. Maryam Nawaz also lauded the Pakistan Army's success in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, extending congratulations to Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Air Chief Babar Zaheer Sindhu. She paid tribute to the sacrifices of military personnel, emphasising national unity and youth empowerment. "The youth must become a fortress for Pakistan. If they stand strong, no force can defeat us," she stated. "I want every hardworking student to feel supported. If parents lack resources, the state must act like a mother." The Honhar scholarship amount was raised from Rs30, to Rs50,000, and the number of distributed laptops increased to 100,000. "These are your rights, not favours," she told the students. Concluding her address, she urged youth to reject sedition and uphold national values. "Those who lead youth astray have abandoned them. Let us stand with development, unity, and the dignity of our institutions." Earlier, the CM met with the outgoing Country Director of the World Bank, Najy Benhassine, reaffirming the province's long-standing partnership with the international financial institution and paying tribute to his contributions since assuming the role in 2020. During the meeting held in Lahore, the Chief Minister warmly welcomed Benhassine and praised his efforts in strengthening development cooperation between the World Bank and Pakistan, particularly Punjab.

Southport killer's cushy life in prison despite hurling boiling water over guard

Axel Rudakubana killed Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, Alice Aguiar, nine, and six-year-old Bebe King at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport, Merseyside last summer Southport killer Axel Rudakubana has jail treats such as Maltesers and McCoy's delivered to his cell by prison officers - despite attacking a guard with boiling water. Rudakubana is still able to buy the snacks at London's Belmarsh Prison, where he is serving at least 52 years for killing three girls at a dance class. Sources inside the clink have called this "shocking and disgusting" as Rudakubana, 18, threw scalding water over a prison officer there earlier this month. ‌ The triple killer is also allowed to call family, have religious visits and receive money from relatives while at the jail in Plumstead area of southeast London. Responding to the development, Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick said: "I cannot believe this monster has been allowed to keep these privileges. ‌ "It's a disgrace. He should be stripped of them immediately, no questions asked. It's the least the victims of his horrendous crime would expect. We've got to regain control of prisons before an officer is killed." ‌ The stricken prison guard was rushed to hospital earlier this month after the attack. Yet, Rudakubana is still able to fill out a sheet and get treats sent to his cell, often delivered by close colleagues of the victim. "He's been spending £5.50 a week in the canteen since the attack, and can spend it on anything he likes as long as it's not dangerous. He's still allowed to buy things like Maltesers and Pringles crisps if he fancies them," a source told The Sun. "Prison officers, who are the colleagues of the guy he attacked, have to collect his canteen order and deliver it to his cell. It's made some angry and upset. The array of goods on the canteen list is quite staggering and it has all the decent brands." ‌ While the thug's TV has been removed from his cell and his time out of his cell has been limited, Rudakubana can also buy toiletries, vitamins, drinks and biscuits from the shop. The source added: "The principle of it is shocking — and he's been spending what he can every week since the attack. It's very rare for a governor to completely strip a prisoner of canteen rights but I'd say this is an instance where it's justified." The insider claims the teen has been sent money from his family since the attack on the officer, and has had phone calls with relatives. The attack saw Rudakubana, formerly of Banks, Lancashire, was allowed a kettle and is believed to have used it to boil water ahead of the "serious assault" on May 8. But he is, as a result, barred from buying anything that could be turned into a weapon, such as tins of tuna, after the jagged edge of a can was used to slash Sara Sharif's killer dad Urfan at Belmarsh in January. It is believed the guard in the Rudakubana case has returned to work. Speaking to The Sun, the Prison Service said it did not comment on individuals.

A Quiet Summer Is On The Horizon For The Rangers With Their Eyes On 2026 Offseason

A Quiet Summer Is On The Horizon For The Rangers With Their Eyes On 2026 Offseason You should expect a quiet offseason in The Big Apple for the New York Rangers. After the Rangers floundered and missed the playoffs this past season, some significant changes seemed to be on the horizon, and that was partly true with the firing of Peter Laviolette and the hiring of Mike Sullivan. Advertisement However, in terms of roster changes, there shouldn't be all that many drastic changes at least made during the summer. Rangers Are Reportedly Testing The Trade Market On K'Andre Miller Rangers Are Reportedly Testing The Trade Market On K'Andre Miller Trading K'Andre Miller does not appear to be out of the picture for the New York Rangers. The Rangers don't have much cap flexibility and even if they are willing to trade away Chris Kreider without retaining much or any of his contract, the team still has to extend both Will Cuylle and K'Andre Miller. It's also highly unlikely Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury trades any of the team's big-time veterans including Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trocheck, J.T. Miller, Mika Zibanejad, and Adam Fox who are all still under contract. Advertisement Plus, this free agency class is relatively weak with a lack of star talent, so it would be wise for Drury to be patient and not get stuck into a long-term contract that could bite the Rangers down the road. In the summer of 2026 when Artemi Pamarin's seven-year, $81.5 million contract expires, there will be an abundance of high-level free agents potentially on the market the likes of Connor McDavid, Kirill Kaprizov, Jack Eichel, and Jason Robertson. While all these players likely won't be free agents, there will certainly be a much deeper free agency class in 2026 compared to this upcoming offseason and that may be the right time for the Rangers to cash in. We'll see what actually ends up transpiring in New York, but don't expect a ton of action from Drury and company.
